From my experiences in IITM in two years, this is a list of what I think one must do as a fresher in IITM. Considering JEE has just concluded, I think the timing of the post is quite relevant too. Here goes..
1. Roam around the campus. IITM is such an awesome campus, and the best period is when you "discover" the campus with other fresher friends on cycle rides across the campus.
2. Pursue your passions. IITM has so much of opportunities provided, and so sing, dance, play to your heart's content. You may also pursue your passion seriously if you wish so.
3. Live through the ragging period. The ragging in IITM is quite mild, and is a period when you get to know the what's what of IITM. So you better not develop cold feet, and live through it, do all the seniors ask you to do, and trust me, you'll be laughing it off a few weeks down the drain.
4. Don't bunk classes. If your gonna bunk classes as a fresher, you sure are as a sophomore and more classes go down the gutter as you go into higher years. So, be quite high on the discipline quotient. It might help you set standards for yourself in the semesters to come.
5. Chat a lot with your wingmates. These are the guys who will be with you for the years to come, and it will be an ample opportunity to make some cool buddies.
6. Cut down on sleep. The lesser said about this, the better. But you might need sleeplessness fundaes for phenomena like "NIGHT OUTS" later in the year and in the following years.
7. Mug like you've never done before! If your not gonna boost your CG in your first semester, you never are!!
8. Put department enthu. I guess if you put a lot of department enthu and start learning the ways of the department in the first year itself, you wouldn't hate your department as many others do.
9. Meet a lot of your seniors. You learn a lot, and some of them might end up becoming real close to you too! :)
10. Never show attitude. Seniors don't generally like freshers showing attitude. You show attitude, and your more or less screwed.
11. Meet a lot of profs. Make impressions that stay. Helps later.
12. Learn gult. Helps loads with gen insti junta. Else it could get painful too.
13. Learn Tam. Helps putting fundaes in Guru, Tiffs, Workshop etc.
14. Start liking Basera and Tiffs food. You might soon have to be a regular to either of these places.
15. Start celebrating birthdays at 12 in the night, at CCD. Trust me, it's a lot of fun, and makes the birthday boy/girl feel really good.
16. Put "put" and "macha" in every other statement, learn to put some insti pseud macha! :P
17. If your looking at projects from CFI, go ahead, but don't try for projects under professors unless your doubly sure about the fact that you WANT to be there. It could get disastrous.
18. Use your insti name if it's catchy, it gives you a totally different identity.
19. Go for a walk whenever possible, you might not get such an ambience for a leisure walk all your life.
20. Hang out in the library as much as possible. Gives one a kick to sit chatting in the library cabins, where it's supposed to be all silence.
21. Attend various lectures organised in the institute, right from EMLs to the Shaastra VCs and the like. Trust me, potential knowledge you can gather in IITM is far higher than many other places, and make full use of it.
22. Put a lot of hostel enthu. It makes your hostel life eventually a very memorable and noteworthy one.
23. Stay innocent, but never ignorant. Doesn't help to watch porn, but definitely does to know what/where a G-Spot is. No, I'm not talkin about the Gajendra circle.
24. Watch cricket matches in the common room. Bet you'll love the experience. :)
25. Don't go home during Shaastra/Saarang. Stay fully. And enjoy each of the pro-shows/events you attend. Could be the memory of a lifetime!
